Is there a ban on Cadmium batteries in Portable Devices?

In short yes, many old power tools used cadmium batteries but they are now no longer exempt from RoHS.

The 2013 Directive extends the ban on the placing on the market of portable batteries and accumulators containing cadmium to portable batteries and accumulators intended for use in cordless power tools. These batteries previously benefitted from an exemption. However, this exemption is removed by the 2013 Directive.

Old Cadmium batteries should be recycled by professional companies such as Secure Data Recycling.
